How to use your filter

Connecting your filter

You supply the bucket. Everything else, including the drill bit, is in the kit.

  1. Drill one hole Near the bottom of any clean plastic bucket, using the drill bit supplied in the kit. One hole is all the filter needs.
  2. Fit the connector Push the bucket connector through the hole and seat the washers on both sides so the join is watertight.
  3. Attach the tube and filter Connect the tube to the outside of the bucket, then the filter to the tube. The flow-stop clamp goes on the tube so you can start and stop the flow.
  4. Fill and release Fill the bucket, raise it above your collection container and release the clamp. Clean water runs at about a litre every two minutes.

Cleaning your filter

This is the entire maintenance routine. There are no cartridges to buy and no parts to replace, and a filter kept clean lasts up to ten years.

  1. Fill the syringe with clean water The syringe is in the kit, and the hook holds it on the bucket so it does not get lost between cleanings.
  2. Push it back through the outlet Backwashing pushes clean water the wrong way through the membrane, lifting off what the filter has caught.
  3. Repeat until it runs clear Once a week is enough for most households. Do it sooner whenever the flow slows down, which is the filter telling you it is due.

Good to know

It fits more than a bucket

The kit includes tap connectors, tubes and washers, so the same filter runs off a JoJo tank, a garden tap, a kitchen tap or a Hippo Water Roller.

Very muddy water

Water carrying a lot of silt will slow the flow and mean more frequent backwashing. The Village Pre-Filter screens the larger dirt out first and keeps the rate up.
