99.9999%

of bacteria removed

A removal rate that exceeds EPA standards, achieved on gravity alone with a membrane you clean rather than replace.

Bacteria

Removes the bacteria behind cholera, typhoid, botulism and amoebic dysentery, including E. coli, coliform bacteria, streptococcus and salmonella.

Protozoa and cysts

Removes giardia, cryptosporidium and cyclospora, the parasites that survive most household treatment.

Without chemicals or power

No chlorine, no tablets, no batteries and no electricity. Gravity does the work, so it keeps running through load shedding.

Four things to do, then it just runs

The kit includes the drill bit, the connectors and the syringe. You supply the buckets.

Questions people ask before buying

Does it need electricity or chemicals?

Neither. The filter works on gravity alone, so there are no batteries, no power and no chlorine tablets. It keeps working during load shedding and in areas with no electricity at all.

Do I have to buy replacement cartridges?

No. There are no parts to replace. You maintain the filter by backwashing it with the syringe included in the kit, and it lasts up to ten years when kept clean. That is the whole running cost.

What kind of water can I put through it?

River water, rainwater, borehole water, tank water and municipal water. It also connects to a JoJo tank, a garden tap or a Hippo Water Roller. For very muddy water, adding the Village Pre-Filter keeps the flow rate up and extends the life of the main filter.

How fast is it?

The Village Bucket Filter delivers roughly one litre every two minutes, which is enough for a household drinking and cooking supply. The Village Facility Filter, which plumbs into an existing system, handles up to 9 000 litres an hour for schools, clinics and farms.

What does delivery cost?

Delivery is a flat R95 anywhere in South Africa and is added at checkout. All product prices on this site exclude delivery.

Is it actually certified?

Yes. The filter has been tested by the SABS against SANS 5221:2011, SANS 6315:2003 and SANS 241:2011, and it has been tested and certified by the World Health Organisation. It exceeds EPA standards with a 99.9999% bacteria removal rate.

What comes in the box?

The filter, a bucket connection and tube with a flow-stop clamp, tap connectors, tubes and washers, a syringe for backwashing, a hook to hang the syringe, a pictorial instruction manual and a 12 month manufacturer guarantee. You supply your own buckets.
